This spindle assembly is characterised in that it comprises a spindle (2), at least one bearing sleeve (6) serving to support this spindle (2) without touching it, like a gas bearing pressurised externally, and a casing (3) serving to accommodate this bearing sleeve (6), and in that, in this same bearing sleeve (6) are formed, on the one hand, at least three gas supply grooves (5) extending axially and communicating with a clearance (8) formed between the spindle (2) and the bearing sleeve (6) so as to allow the introduction of compressed gas into this clearance and, on the other hand, a discharge groove (10) extending axially and communicating with the said clearance (8) so as to evacuate the compressed gas from it. <IMAGE>
