A service processor (SVP) is connected via a coordination circuit (PSC) with sectional position connections (SI) for various functional units including one (FU sub IOP) which has a sectional position adaptor (SIA) interfaced (MSI) to the service bus (SI-BUS). Individual sub-units (M1-Mn) are connected via their own adaptors (MIA) so that the service processor (SVP) can exchange control information and data with the sub-units (M1-Mn) via this extended service connection, without the circuit (PSC) having to provide additional connections (SI) for that purpose. The sub-units also share an input/output bus (L-BUS) which carries data traffic between main storage and peripherals.
