Aq., pigment-contg. varnishes (I) comprise two components (A) and (B). (A) comprises 0.1-15 (pref. 2-10) wt.% blocked acid (II) as potential hardening catalyst, and 10-90 (pref. 2-65 wt.% aq. dispersion of a polyacrylate (III) which is self-crosslink-able via amide gps. of formula -CO-NR1-CHR2-OR3 (i) and (B) comprises 20-90 (pref. 70-90) wt'% melamine- (IV) or melamine-/urea- (V) resin in aq. dispersion or solution. (A) and (B) are mixed before application to give a ratio of 1 pt. wt. (III) to 0.4-1 (pref. 0.6-0.8) pt. wt. (IV) or 0.4-1.5 (pref. 1-1.2) pts. wt. (V). In (i), R1 = H or -CHR2-OR3; R2 = H or -COOR4; R3 = H or 1-10C hydrocarbyl, pref. Me, Et, iso-Pr, or iso-Bu; R4 = 1-5C alkyl' Finishing foils and endless edges are coated with (I) and the wet film is hardened for 10-55 (pref. 10-20) secs. at 140-210 deg C. More specifically (II) is a salt of 2-amino-2-ethylpropane-1,3-diol or 2-amino-2-methylpropanol, pref. with para-toluenesulphonic acid.
