Ion exchange material is charged to first (1) and second (2) vessels via respective inlets (5 and 7). Impure soln. e.g. NaCl is fed (13) to the second vessel (2) and passes upwardly through the exchange material therein. Purified soln. (14) is removed from the second vessel (2). Exchange material from the second vessel (2) is then transferred via a pipe (9) to the first vessel (1) e.g. by addn. of air (11) and is progressively replaced by fresh material from the first vessel (1) via a connecting pipe (3). Prior to transfer from the first vessel (1), the material is regenerated e.g. by addn. sequentially of H2O (21), aq. HCl (20), H2O (19), aq. NaOH (18), H2O (17) which are then removed via outlets (22 and 30).
