The honing, lapping or polishing machine has at the level of the top and bottom machining discs an outer ring with teeth or pins, a similar inner one driven by a motor, and planetary pinions in between and meshing with them accommodating the work and forming an epicyclic gear train. A stop signal from a control unit switches off the motor and applies a brake, while a loading and unloading head is movable above one or more of the pinions. The number of teeth or pins on the outer ring (29) is a whole multiple of that of the pinions while outside the path of the latter is a position detector when a pinion assumes a predetermined position in relation to it. This signal causes the control unit to generate the stop signal.
