A method for composting waste comprises microbially degrading rotting material in a container with aeration and, after the readily decomposable components have degraded, recycling the spent air through the rotting material. Also claimed is an appts. for performing the method, comprising a closed or closable container which has an opt. air-pervious base and which is fitted with compressors for introducing air and re-circulating the spent air. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method produces dry, completely hygienic, i.e. biologically inactive, and storage-stable compost from household waste. The method is less time consuming and simpler than those of DE 243367, DE 3046646 and DE 3637393 in that it is completed within a few days and is carried out in a single container in which the waste does not require mixing during processing. Further, the method insures composting of material at the periphery of the mass and avoids the formation of unpleasant smells.
