Modified polymeric material (I) with improved blood compatibility comprises a polymeric substrate (II) carrying, as substits. on the amide or acid amide gps., sulphonated polyethylene oxide (PEO) gps. Pref. (II) is a polyurethane, polyamide, polyacrylamide or their copolymers, and the degree of substitution by sulphonated PEO is 5-50% for a bulk reaction or 5-95% for a surface reaction. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used as constructional (or coating) materials for medical appts. or instruments which come into contact with blood, e.g. artificial hearts or valves; blood vessels; pericardium; blood oxygenators, kidneys or catheters. The improved blood compatibility is attributed to exclusion of protein and thrombocytes by the hydrophilic PEO and an antithrombogenic effect of the sulphonate anion.
