Novel chiral oxazolidinones are of formula (I) or (II). R1 = opt. branched 1-16C alkyl or 3-16C alkenyl each opt. contg. asymmetric C atoms, etc.; R2 and R3 = H, 1-12C alkyl (opt. substd.) phenyl or cyclohexyl (opt. substd.); j, l and n = 0, 1 or 2; k and m = 0 or 1 with the following provisos: when j and/or l = 0, k = 0; when n = 0, m = 0; and j+l+n = 1-3; A1 and A2 = Ph, cyclohexyl, pyrimidin-2- or 5-yl, pyridin-2- or 3-yl, pyridazin-3-yl, pyrazin-2-yl, thiophen-2-yl, etc.; A3 = Ph, cyclohexyl, pyrimidin-2- or 5-yl, pyridin-2- or 3-yl or pyridazin-3-yl; M1 and M2 = -CO.O-, -O.CO-, -CH2.CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CH2.O- or -O.CH2-; and X = -O.CH2-, -CH2-, -C(O).O-, -O.C(O)-, -CH2.O- or -C2H4-. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of (I) and (II) as doping agents for ferroelectric liq. crystal mixts. is claimed, with the mixt. pref. having a smectic phase. Also claimed are electrooptical switches and display devices which contain a liq. crystal mixt. including (I) or (II) together with 2 electrodes, 2 carrier plates and at least one orientation layer. (I) and (II) impart short switching times to the liq. crystal mixts. and are suitable for producing helix compensation in the mixts. Also, addn. of small amts. of (I) to tilted smectic phases causes strong twisting in the cholesteric phase.
