New N-heterocyclic cpds. are of formula R1-A1-Z1-A2-R2 (I) one of R1 and R2 = H, (substd.) 1-15C alkyl, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent -CH2- gps. can be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -CO-O- and/or -CH=CH-, F, Cl, Br, CN, NCS or R3-(A3)p-Z2-; the other of R1 and R2 = an optically active organic gp. with an asymmetrical C atom; A1 = -A-, -A4-Z3-A- or -A-Z3-A4-; A = 1,4-phenylene, in which at least one -CH= gp. is replaced by -NO; A2, A3 and A4 = 1,4-phenylene, opt. with 1 or 2 F, Cl, Me and/or CN substits., in which 1 or 2 -CH= gps. can be replaced by -N=, 1,4-cyclohexylene, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent -CH2- gps. can be replaced by -O- and/or -S-, piperidin-1,4-diyl, 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)-octylene, opt. CN-substd. decahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl or 1,2,3,4-tetra-hydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl; Z1, Z2 and Z3 = -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -OCH2-, -CH2O-, -CH2-CH2-, substd. ethylene or a single bond; R3 = H, (substd.) 1-15 C alkyl, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent -CH2- gps. can be replaced by a -O-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -CO-O- or -CH=CH-, F, Cl, Br, NCS or CN; p = 1 or 2; if A = pyrimidin-2,5-diyl, one of R1 and R2 = an optically active organic gp. and the other = (substd.) 1-15 C alkyl, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent -CH2-gps. can be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -CO-O- and/or -CH=CH-.
