The device for tensioning an endless transmission element such as a chain or belt has a roller adjoining the transmission element and mounted on a swing bar which impinges on a spring in the direction of the transmission element. A locking unit (4) prevents a return stroke of the swing bar (2). This locking unit can have a detent element such as a detent pin or ratchet which engages in a gear unit which can have wedged sections. USE/ADVANTAGE - Transmission element tensioner. Low cost design using a locking unit instead of a damper element.
