PURPOSE:To decrease the number of electrodes and the number of driving circuits by arranging cathode scanning lines horizontally and anode scanning lines vertically and scanning the cathode scanning lines laterally corresponding to a sequential synchronizing signal. CONSTITUTION:Two right and left anode driving circuits 2 are provided corresponding to a discharge panel 1 and one cathode driving circuit 3 is provided laterally to the discharge panel 1. A scanning direction converting circuit 9 converts a digital video signal outputted by an A/D converter 6 from the horizontal direction to the vertical direction and a conversion processing circuit 5 performs series-parallel conversion and transfers the video signal, column by column, to the two anode driving circuits 2 at a time to drive a discharge panel 2 from the left side of the discharge panel 1. A control signal generating circuit 4, on the other hand, generates a pulse signal for scanning with the synchronizing signal and applies it to the cathode driving circuit 3, which applies the pulse signal to the cathode scanning lines. Consequently, the driving circuits and electrodes are decreased in number.
