The method involves transmitting electromagnetic waves from a motor vehicle to a road surface using electromagnetic wave transmitting system. Polarized and/or depolarized electromagnetic waves reflected on the road surface are detected along an angle with respect to the road surface so as to determine reflectometric characteristics of the road surface, where the angle is comprised between 15 and 25 degrees.
