The present invention concerns the method for galvanically preparing electrodes for use as cathodes for hydrogen evolution from alkaline solutions in electrochemical processes, said electrodes being constituted by a conductive support and an electrocatalytic coating containing metals of the platinum group and an additional doping compound. The method of the invention comprises applying said electrocatalytic coating from a galvanic plating bath containing the metals to be deposited in the form of soluble salts of metals of the platinum group and further containing said doping compound which is constituted by at least one element selected from the group of: gold, cadmium, thallium, lead, tin, arsenic, vanadium, molybdenum, platinum or palladium. The addition of said doping compounds allows the electrodes, when used as cathodes in membrane or diaphragm chlor-alkali cells, to be substantially immune to poisoning by heavy metal impurities present in the alkaline solutions. |
