The invention relates to a surgical obturator (1) for puncturing a body wall, comprising a tubular housing, one end of which forms an insertion tip (3) with a continuously reducing diameter, and a blade (9) that projects beyond the insertion tip for making an incision in the body wall. The aim of the invention is to reduce the risk of injury during the puncturing of the body wall. To achieve this: the insertion tip comprises a central protective cap (6), which can be displaced in relation to the insertion tip in a longitudinal direction between an advanced resting position and a retracted working position; the blade can be displaced in the housing in a longitudinal direction between an advanced incision position and a retracted protective position; the housing is equipped with a withdrawal device that displaces the blade from the incision position into the protective position; and the withdrawal device can be activated by the displacement of the protective cap from the working position into the resting position.
