An industrial or automotive lubricating oil compsn. is claimed which comprises (a) 0-40 wt.% mineral oil(s); and (b) 100-60 wt.% of a polyether of formula RX(CCxH2xO)n(CyH2yO)pH)m (I) R= alkyl or alkylphenyl or 9-30C; X = O, S or N; x = 2-4; y = 6-30 m = 1 or Z; and n and p = such that (I) contains 1-35 wt.% (CyH2yO) units and 35-80 wt.% (CxH2xO) units. (I) differ in general from prior-art polyethers in that they can be used alone or in amts. predominating over those of mineral oils in lubricants.
