A linear function of the differences of the second powers of the angular speeds of the wheels of the first and second pairs of wheels of a motor vehicle is calculated, and an indication of the possible presence of an under-inflated tyre on one of the axles is obtained from the position of the value of the function in relation to at least one predetermined value. Advantageously, this function is formed as a first detection criterion (CR1), and the indications provided by this first criterion are combined with those obtained from a second criterion (CR2) sensitive to the axle having at least one under-inflated tyre, in order to detect the position of an under-inflated tyre and assess the amount of under-inflation. <IMAGE>
