There is shown a flexible rubber tile 1 which has a planar face 2 which in use is the exposed face, and an opposite face 3 in which there is a recess 4 defined by a boundary edge 5 of the face 3. Embedded in the tile adjacent surface 2 there is a copper or copper-containing mesh 2' arranged so that part at least of the copper is exposed to the surrounding medium such as sea water. The open mesh obviates the formation of algae or growth (marine fouling) and it may also act as a 'shielding' system using an electric current to run along the surface 2. Through hole 7, having non-return valve 8, enables recess 4 to be evacuated while adhesive, e.g. a two-part epoxy, bonds surface 3 to a substrate. Recess 4 may be replaced by a multiplicity of recesses connected by vacuum passages (Figs. 3 and 4). The same constructions may be applied to sheeting. <IMAGE> |
