The invention relates to a silicon dioxide-based fibre product and to a process for producing this product. Producing fire-resistant inorganic textiles is very difficult and the inorganic fibres lack the textile production properties which are typical of organic fibres. This problem has now been solved by producing a readily weavable, nettable or spinnable silicon dioxide viscose material fibre which fibre, preferably in the form of a finished textile, is baked in order to remove the viscose, treated with a glazing reagent and baked in order to produce a surface glazing. The viscose is removed in order to produce heat-resistance, and the surface glazing is formed for preserving the strength of the fibres. In some cases, the fibres are initially treated with a glazing reagent, after which the removal of viscose and the formation of the surface glazing are carried out in one single baking. The fibres can readily be combined with different substrates, inter alia for decorated articles and laminate or mixed structures which are bound together by the glazing.
