PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF CARBOXY METHYL ALGINATE

Carboxymethylalginate is prepared by (1) dispersing alginic acid salt in ethanol, (2) adding caustic soda with agitation at 40-50 deg.C and (3) adding chloroacetic acid and reacting the mixt. In an exemplary experiment, 578g alginic acid salt of lower than 80 mesh is dispersed in 95 % ethanol of 300 ml in a rotationally agitating reactor. 30 % caustic soda of 850 ml is slowly added at 40-50 deg.C to continue reaction for 30 mins. And then 78 % chloroacetic acid of 370 ml is slowly added at 45 deg.C for 20 mins. and reacted with agition for 2 hrs. The obtained product is refined, filtered and dried. Tourniquet is made from wovenfiber or sponge of produced carboxymethylalginate.
