The invention relates to an apparatus and a method making it possible to control and bring about communication between office-automation devices, such as copiers, fax machines and/or printers. The apparatus brings about communication and controls various modules of office-automation devices which enable an external device, for example a control panel (20), to access the state of a prototype device, for example a copier, a printer or a fax machine. The control panel can communicate with the prototype device (10) and control the latter. Moreover, a remote diagnosis station (30) can produce diagnostics relating to the prototype device. <IMAGE>
