Apparatus for automatic distribution of water, comprising a water supply conduit connected to the public mains system, a manually controlled water distribution valve accessible to the user, at least one automatic control valve not accessible to the user, a pulse counter measuring the volume of water withdrawn, a means for signalling the end of the withdrawal, and an assembly for monitoring the distribution of water, including: a means for identifying the user or his possibilities of payment, a means for controlling the opening of the automatic valve or valves in response to a signal from the identification means, and for closing the automatic valve or valves in response to a signal from the means for signalling the end of the withdrawal, and, if appropriate, a memory storing the information relative to each withdrawal of water and transmitting this information, when requested, to a processing centre.
