PURPOSE:To impart storing property to the result of detection and to make it possible to monitor the presence or absence of internal discharging in an apparatus by conducting a current from a polarizing electrode to a detecting electrode in a first solid-state electrolyte so that metal ions flow, and depositing the metal on the detecting electrode. CONSTITUTION:Before a gas to be detected and a detecting electrode 2 are brought into contact, a current flows from a polarizing electrode 4 to an elec trode 2 in first solid-state electrolyte 3 so that silver ions flow. The silver is deposited on the electrode 2. Namely, the current-carrying is conducted with the electrode 4 as an anode and with the electrode 2 as a cathode. Thus, the specified amount of the metal ion in the electrolyte is deposited on the electrode 2. At this time, the supply of Ag<+> from the electrode 4 is less for the silver ions Ag<+> in the electrolyte 3. Therefore, anions become excessive in the electro lyte in the vicinity of the electrode 4, and the + charge is induced on the elec trode 4. The potential difference, i.e. the polarization potential, is generated between the electrode 4 and a reference electrode 6. The current can be conducted until the potential difference reaches the decomposition voltage of the solid-state electrolyte. |
