The method and the device according to the invention relate to foldable child seats, capable of being mounted on the seat part of a bench seat of a vehicle, including a platform (6) mounted on articulated connecting rods (3), the rotation of these connecting rods making it possible to raise the seat to place it in the position of use, or, to the contrary, to lower it in order to set it into the bench seat. The method consists in using at least part of the weight of the user, when he takes his place on the seat, to bring about a limited downward sliding of the platform (6) in the vicinity of its articulated connection (10, 11) with at least one connecting rod (3) which gives rise to locking of this articulation by at least two surfaces (14, 15, 16, 17) coming into abutment, one of these surfaces (16, 17) being secured to the connecting rod (3), and the other (14, 15) secured to the other component (10) of the articulation.
