The invention relates to a process for recovering a lower alcohol from a reaction mixture resulting from a reaction between pyrocatechol and a lower alcohol. The reaction mixture is distilled and separated into a light distilled vapour fraction (II) comprising the unreacted lower alcohol and water and into a residual fraction (III) comprising a reaction product and unreacted pyrocatechol. The fraction (II) is then distilled and separated into a distilled vapour fraction (IV) comprising a much greater concentration of lower alcohol and a residual water fraction (V). The fraction (IV) is introduced into a module (12) comprising a gas separation membrane (12a) which selectively allows steam to pass and separated into a retained fraction (VI) comprising a high concentration of the lower alcohol, remaining on the supply side (21) of the membrane, and a fraction which has passed through (VII) comprising a high water concentration, which is sent to a new distillation stage from the discharge side (22) of the membrane, and the fraction (VI) is cooled and recovered. Application to the technology for the production of guaiacol and of 2-ethoxyphenol. <IMAGE>
