Sheet strip metal is corrugated in the direction of the strip; identical lengths of coated or uncoated corrugated strip are folded together in an S-shape to form the catalyst core; and the catalyst core is then inserted into the catalyst shell. Strip metal (1) is unwound (2) and passed through corrugating rollers (3,4) before being cut (6) to length. A number of lengths (7) are then folded S-shaped (c,d) to form a core (e), allowing passage of exhaust gases along the corrugated cavities, which is cut to lengths at regular intervals (10). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process enables mfr. of longer catalyst cores than would be possible by bending and rolling the same strip metal substrate along its shortest width.
