Process for the one-stage treatment of crude sludges by means of biological drying and mass reduction, wherein batchwise, aerobic microbial preliminary and secondary rotting results in a humus-like substrate. Addition of organic additives and of the return material takes place sufficiently long before the mechanical preliminary dewatering and the heat produced in the preliminary rotting is used for preheating the air which is to be actively blown in or directly for preheating the crude sludge. Further embodiments relate to advantageous apparatuses for carrying out the process.
