Fuel compsns. comprise soluble Mo(VI) cpds. and are free of other metals. The Mo cpds. are: (a) 0.1-20.0 ppm (0.01-10 ppm as Mo) of Mo(VI) sulphonates, diamine complexes with ligands of formula R4R5N-(CR4R5)n-NR4R5 (where R4 and R5 each = H or 1-20C alkyl; and n 1-20), or cpds. free of N, S and P; or (b) an amt. effective to reduce elevated steady state octane requirement, pref. 10-1000 ppm as Mo, of Mo(VI) sulphonates, carboxylates, naphthonates, phenates, alkoxides, aryloxides, beta-diketone cpds. or diamine complexes as in (a).
