A safety mat provides switching when an individual applies pressure to the surface. The mat has a base plate (14) that supports a flexible tube (22) arranged in loops. The tube is located between the base and a cover plate (16). The internal surface of the tube has conductors at the top and at the bottom. When pressure is applied the conductors are forced into contact. The connection may be used to turn off or disable a machine. ADVANTAGE - Reliable operation when body wt. is applied.
