A steam iron having a steam chamber (5) formed in a heated sole plate (2) is provided with a valve member (20) for controlling the supply of water to the steam chamber (5). The valve member (20) cooperates with a seat (14) provided on the end of a connector member (12) and is moved away from the seat (14) by a snap-acting bimetallic actuator (10) to allow admission of water when the temperature of the sole plate (2) is above a predetermined value, sensed by the actuator. The actuator is housed in an upstanding well (16) and is shielded from the incoming water by a flexible cap-shaped moulding (11) which includes the valve member (20). |
