A fabric type mat, particularly for use in cars, has an elastic backing with spokes projecting from its underside and distributed over its area; the backing is an impervious thermoplastic, pref. PVC, and the spokes are conical with pointed ends. A needled felt fabric of uniform thickness is made of synthetic, natural or mixed fibres; its loops are partly embedded on one side in the backing layer of (pref.) PVC. Areas of the PVC have projections on the underside; alternatively, the whole area of the PVC can be covered with the projections other than along the edges.
