The sales counter is for use e.g. by a chemist and comprises a flat working surface for the chemist and a flat reception surface for the customers. The counter plate (2) is stepped, so that the reception surface (4) is at a lower level than the working one (3). The surfaces can be joined to each other by a rising intermediate surface (5). The depth of the reception surface can be between a quarter and a half of that of the complete plate.
