The tightening mechanism is for a vehilce safety belt and locks at the end of the tightening movement, being activated by a sensitive system when a critical degree of acceleration is exceeded. The belt buckle (4) slide with a supporting member (2) in the lengthwise direction in a housing (1) fixed or lockable to the vehicle. A mechanism in the housing allows inward movement of the member, but prevents it in the opposite direction. The buckle or member is coupled to a flexible component (10) attached at the other end to a power accumulator, pref. with a pre-loaded spring (6), pulling the buckle inwards via the component when released. The sensitive system actuates a locking device holding the spring in the pre-loaded state, and freeing it when the critical acceleration occurs.
