In order to provide an automatic transmission for vehicles, having a wide range of transmission ratios, a first transmission unit (11,12,13) is provided, with a transmission ratio variable with continuity, connected on its inlet side with a driving shaft (14). At least a second transmission unit (17,18) and a third transmission unit (19,20) are provided, each with fixed and different transmission ratios, with each of them being connected, on its inlet side, with said first transmission unit (11,12,13), and on its outlet side, with a driven shaft (16) of the vehicle, which they alternatively drive. The second transmission unit (17,18) and the third transmission unit (19,20) are connected with the first transmission unit (11,12,13) by means of two respective automatic couplings (21,22), which engage at different actuation speeds.
