Prodn. of ketones of formula R1R2C=CR3-CO-Me (I) or R1R2CH-CHR3-CO-Me (II) from 4-substd. 5-methylene-1,3 -dioxolan-2-one of formula (III) is effected by contacting (III) with a catalyst comprising a zeolite, a zeolite-type phosphate and/or a B, Ce, Fe, Zr or Sr phosphate: R1-R3 = H or opt. substd. 1-12C alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl, or R1+R3 or R2+R3 completes a cycloalkane ring. For prodn. of (II), the catalyst also contains a hydrogenation component and the reaction is effected in the presence of H2.
