Reconditioning of porous aluminium tanks - involves roughening surface of porous area and compressing the surface

Tanks made of aluminium of 99.5 percent purity, which are used in the foodstuff industry, are liable to become porous due to the effect of the acid in the foodstuff. These tanks can be made fit for re-use by roughening the porous areas by sand blasting using sharp edged grains of sand or carborundum to produce small projections and hollows in the aluminium surface. The areas thus treated are then subjected to shot blasting or a similar process which compresses the aluminium and closes the pores. USE - Reconditioning of aluminium tanks for foodstuffs
