Described is a device for driving a tool in the longitudinal direction to carry out an oscillatory back-and-forth motion, the tool working with high efficiency at high oscillation frequencies and being usable as an easy-to-handle hand tool since, as a result of the drive design, the weight-to-exerted-force and volume-to-exerted-force of the driven tool can be made particularly low. This drive comprises a reciprocating piston (8) which feeds oil to a work piston (22) and causes the work piston to reciprocate against the pressure of a spring (25) acting on the work piston (22) and against the pressure of the atmosphere. The tool to be driven is preferably connected to the work cylinder (22) by means of the couterpressure spring (25). The work cylinder (20) and feed cylinder (9) are connected to each other by a flexible hose line (14) so that their weight does not act on the hand tool.
