The invention relates to a process for producing fatty acid esters of lower monovalent alcohols by the esterification of fatty acid glycerides in the presence of basic catalysts. In the process of the invention, esterification is performed in the presence of 0.025 to 0.045 mol of an alkaline or alkaline earth metal compound, preferably sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium or potassium alcoholate in relation to 100 g fatty acid glyceride and the fatty acid esters are subsequently purified by the addition of 0.3 to 3.0% water by hydration and the separation of the remaining catalyst and other impurities. Unlike the case with the prior art processes it is thus possible to produce fatty acid esters of lower alcohols with any degree of esterification and great purity from untreated oils and fats of natural origin with free fatty acid contents of up to 20% at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure and low excess alcohol with the simplest of equipment. |
