PURPOSE:To provide an electrode body for electrolytic cells which improves the desorption of gases and prevents the deformation of exchange membranes by laminating expanded metals or the like of which the meshes are coarser and the wire diameters are larger as they go further from the membrane surface on the surfaces of porous layers formed on the membrane surfaces. CONSTITUTION:Gas and liquid permeable porous layers 2, 3 having no electrode activities are formed on the surfaces of an ion exchange membrane 1 of an electrode body, and anodes or cathodes are disposed by way of these, whereby an electrolytic cell is formed. Plural sheets of the anodes 4 and cathodes 5 consisting of expanded metals or wire screens of which the meshes are finer and the wire diameters are smallers as they exist nearer the surfaces of the membrane 1 and the anodes 6 and cathodes 7 consisting of expanded metals or wire screens of which the meshes are coarser and the wire diameters are larger as they exist further from the layers 2, 3 are laminated and disposed on the surfaces of said porous layers 2, 3. By the use of such electrode body, the desorption efficiency of gases is improved, and the electrolytic operation of alkali chloride or the like is stabilized with substantially no elevation of cell voltage. |
