Depressions of rotationally symmetrical shape are formed in a flat surface by grinding so that there is a smooth transition between the depression and the surrounding surface. The depressions are formed by a grinding belt (8) which passes around guide pulleys (3,4,7) and around a spherical roller (6). The guide pulleys (3,4,7) and the spherical roller (6) are mounted on a frame which can be rotated about the vertical axis. The belt (8) is pressed against the surface (9) by the spherical roller (6). The cross-section of the depression can be varied by varying the belt speed, the speed of rotation about the vertical axis and the rate of feed. USE - Grinding depressions in flat surfaces.
