The skylight comprises a casing frame, a hinged leaf, and one or more gas springs, acting as a counterbalancing mechanism, coupled between the casing frame and leaf. On unlocking, the leaf opens largely automatically, leaving an emergency opening on full gas spring piston rod extension. A locking device (7) acts on the gas spring (5), limiting the outward stroke of its piston rod (9), when the leaf (2) is unlocked from the casing frame (1). The bearing for the piston rod eye is pref. on the casing frame, and that for the spring cylinder on the leaf. The spring cylinder (8) has a hinged catch (19), engaging behind a stop (27) on the casing frame.
