When making bag-like packets from two connected packet walls for portions of fibrous filling such as chewing tobacco, a continuous strand of bags open at the sides is formed from a web of packing material into which the portions are placed. These portions (21) of filling material are moved continuously in synchronisation with the associated packets and during transport are brought, eg compressed, to a format corresponding to the packing volume. During further transport along the conveyor path, which directly adjoins the transport path of the packets, the portions are pushed into the packets. During transport along a circular path the portions can be compressed by pressure directed radially outwards. A fluid such as water can be sprayed onto the portions of filling material, more particularly before their compression. USE/ADVANTAGE - Improved continuous prodn of packets of chewing tobacco.
