The U-shaped axle (1) has a short horizontal portion (3) at each end, smoothly radiused (4) to a short straight portion (5) with an equal and opposite radius (6). The two ends are joined by a straight portion. The axle is firmly clamped (11) to a longitudinal suspension arm (10C) shown in cross section. It has an alternative position (10') above the axle. To achieve a horizontal hinge axis, the suspension arm is twisted through an angle alpha. Support arrangements to the vehicle body include simple transverse eye ends with rubber bushes, swinging links and pneumatic suspension.
