Powder is carried on a material with a nap, in the manner of velvet or velour, between whose fibres the powder is held. The nap consists of fibres 0.5 to 3mm long, and the material may be flexible or rigid. The powder may be distributed evenly over the surface of the powder carrier, or the powder may be restricted to certain areas each of which holds a single dose of a powdered medication. The material may be covered on both sides, or on the side which holds the powder only, with a protective foil. The medication is administered by blowing one dose of powder at a time from the powder carrier into the breathing air of the patient. The area from which the powder is to be blown is covered by a mask. The powder carrier is prepd. by spreading the powder evenly onto its surface and working it into the fibres using one or more passes of a suitable rake. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for dosing small quantitites of fine powders, partic. powdered medications such as are used for the treatment of asthma. Provides simplicity of prodn. of the powder-carrying combined with accuracy in the quantities of powder dispensed. An aerosol suitable for inhalation is produced in a simple manner.
