Method and arrangement for recovery of heat from hot contaminated gases in a gas washer 10 in which the gases are brought into direct contact with water which is cooler than the gases to transfer heat and contaminants from the gases to the water. The gas is purified in a pressurized gas washer. The wash water heated above 100 degrees Celsius from the gas washer is fed through a heat exchanger 48 in which it produces pure water vapor in direct contact with pure water. The gas washer is advantageously connected to a pressurized combustion chamber 12.
