1-Chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane is prepared in a good yield and good selectivity by fluorinating trichloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of a compound of the formula: SbClxFy wherein x and y are both a positive number and the sum of x and y is 5, wherein an amount of hydrogen fluoride in a reaction system is at least five moles per one mole of the catalyst.
