In a signal generator casing (1) there are situated the transmitting and receiving diodes (2, 3) disposed on a printed circuit board assembly (10) and radiating in the direction of a covering plate (4) which is also designed as an integrated transmitting and receiving optical unit (5, 6 or 11). This lens unit (5, 6 or 11) is disposed in the door (1a) of the signal generator (SG). According to the invention, the transmitting and receiving device may be disposed alone in its own signal generator casing (1) or together with the signal generator itself in the large casing (1) for 300-mm diameter lenses. In this case, a lens (16) with a diameter of 200 mm is disposed eccentrically (distance a) in the large casing (1) with the transmitting and receiving lens unit (5, 6 or 11) below it in the door (1a).
