The present invention relates especially to a cam possessing a peripheral surface which is treated and hardened in order to be wear resistant. This cam (C) includes, on its peripheral surface (S), a treated and hardened zone (Z) which extends over the perimeter of the cam (C) with a variable width which has a maximum value (l1) at that part of the cam which forms the lobe (1), that is the part that wears the most, and which extends decreasingly (l2) on either side of this part.
