17 beta -N-Monosubstituted adamantyl/norbornanyl carbamoyl-4-aza-5 alpha -androst-1-en-3-ones and androstan-3-ones of the formula: <CHEM> wherein R is selected from hydrogen, methyl and ethyl and R2 is a hydrocarbon radical selected from substituted or unsubstituted 1- or 2-adamantyl or 1- or 2-norbornanyl and wherein the dotted line represents a double bond which can be present; are 5 alpha -reductase inhibitors.
