A method for monitoring the effectiveness of pressure waves and an apparatus for implementing it are described, wherein said apparatus (10) for monitoring the effectiveness of pressure waves from a pressure wave generator (14) includes at least one pressure sensor (12, 13) for sensing the pressure wave and a device (24) for processing the signal from the sensor (12 or 13) on receiving the pressure wave, in order to determine the effectiveness of said pressure wave in relation to the characteristics of the generator (14), as well as an optical device (30) for correcting said generator's characteristics. The method provides real time pressure wave monitoring whereby the waves pressure values, the size of the focal spot or the spacing of the electrodes can be adjusted in real time.
