In an internal combustion engine the gas flows into and from a combustion chamber (10) are controlled by valves (12) each in the form of a valve piston (16) slidable in a valve cylinder (14) defined by a sleeve (15) opening at one end into the combustion chamber (10). The sleeve (15) has a port (17) in alignment with a duct (18) in the engine's cylinder head (6) extending from the port (17) to a manifold (19). The valve piston (16) is operated by a cam (21) which permits the valve piston (16) to move away from the chamber (10) so as to put the port (17) in communication with the chamber (10) when the valve is in the open position but which at all other times holds the valve piston (16) in a position wherein it seals against the wall of the sleeve (15) intermediate the port (17) and said one end to prevent fluid flow between the manifold (19) and the chamber. |
